The strum: Prayersoul

The Strum

It is kind of unfair to have an amazing voice, play the guitar and according to the ladies,be a "looker".Well, for this young man,he embodies all three attributes. His name is Prayer Donovan Mtamangira but he simply goes by the name Prayersoul. He is a Neo-soul artist who definitely knows how to strum that guitar.

Born in Bulawayo to a musical family,Prayer is now based in Harare and has been taking the music scene by storm. Like most musicians he was part of a choir, the school choir to be precise. In his earlier career,he was part of the 'Shape Zimbabwe" album of which he contributed to. Prayersoul, is one of the founding members of the popular ‘Acoustic Night’ (a fast growing platform for neo-soul, jazz and afro-fusion in Harare) , has performed at both the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and the Zimbabwe International Film Festival (ZIFF).

Prayersoul has a very R&B voice,he sounds like Trey Songz but he reminds us of Musiq Soulchild becau…

G Music: Zim Praise

My first encounter with this choir was back in 2011 at the Kirk Franklin Concert when they had an energetic praise session before the main act came onto the stage.I was wowed! They already proved that Zimbabwean gospel music is big and we have enough talented artists to grow the industry.
The ensemble could be likened to South African gospel group, Joyous Celebration, where different solo artists merge their voices and music styles to give the world what we call,"African Praise". Zimpraise is an inter-denominational Praise and Worship group of passionate Christian musicians from different backgrounds and denominations that have joined in union to make one massive Praise and Worship Music team. The aim of uniting the Nations through music for God’s glory is what gave birth to Zimpraise in October of 2006. They have taken stage not only on the Zimbabwean scene throughout the years, but have gone internationally.

#InTheGroove; Sistaz Open Mic

Sistaz Open Mic
Tomorrow is the closing down 'party' of the Sistaz Open Mic at Harare's Book Cafe.A lot of big names in the arts and entertainment industry will be attending and performing and included in the line-up are poetess Xapa Mathazia, singers Cyndi Munyavi,Cynthia Mare,Tina Watyoka and a whole lot of other talented ladies.
So the big question is to those who are not familiar with this circle, what is Sistaz Open Mic? Sistaz Open Mic is an open platform hosted by the cultural organisation Pamberi Trust in partnership with the Book Cafe which has become the main 'home' for all artists;established and rising.Their tagline per se is,"Music, dance, poetry, theater, mime, comedy, whatever, come do your thang."And the ladies definitely know how to do their 'thang'.
Sistaz Open Mic is now in it's sixth year running, with monthly events (usually the second Saturday of every month), and it has been a platform that has seen the birth and accomplishmen…

G Scene: The Rainbow Towers Comedy Fest

We are still recovering from the comedy surgery we had last night at the Rainbow Towers Comedy Fest. The place had everybody who knows everybody there and the stage was well presented. In the biblical story of David and Goliath,David slew the the giant but in last night's performance the giants gave the audience a thorough thump.Beyond a shadow of a doubt Zimbabwe has proved once and for all that they are true conquerors.
Jason and Donovan Goliath showed the audience a thing or two,and of course our local acts who included Micheal K, Q the Boss and of course the main man,Carl Joshua Ncube, (who also brought on stage Dr Zobha);definitely know how to relate to the day to day issues (and make fun of some of popular public figures);we are glad we are not  at the end of their jokes.
On a scale of 1 to 10 this show is a certified 20.Carl Joshua Ncube is not only a great comedian, but he is an excellent organizer and we are looking forward to more comedy festivals, where 'we' go hea…

Star Power: Jennifer Hudson

Star PowerJennifer Hudson She is the big-voiced diva who made it to the top seven on American Idols season three but she's turned out to be a bigger winner.Ironically she is no longer 'big' in body size as she has shed off a lot of weight after being part of the 'Weight Watchers' program,(which she is the spokesperson). She recently received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and that is why she is on our star power.

Brief Bio
Born Jennifer Kate Hudson on September 12, 1981, in Chicago, Illinois.Jennifer came from humble beginnings singing in the church choir and acting in community theater productions.we first met her as a contestant on American Idols but her claim to fame was her award winning role as Effie Melody White in the Broadway turned-screenplay,Dreamgirls; for which she won an Academy Award.

TriviaJennifer was going to perform Over the Rainbow for movie night but was informed that she'd have to perform it Kimberley Locke's way and decided to sing I …

ZGS @ 30Tonight with Zimbabwe' s top jazz and acoustic acts including Prudence Katomeni-Mbofana, Tariro (neGitare) Ruzvidzo, the Luggards and German jazz band, Masaa.

The Zimbabwe German Society is an important place in Zimbabwean arts as it supports a lot of events by Zimbabwean artists especially in the jazz, acoustic and poetic genres.

In The Groove: 2013 American Music Awards

American Music Awards 2013 One of the most prestigious awards were held on 24 November 2014 (but we watched them last night) live at the Nokia Theatre Center in Los Angeles with so much excitement. We wonder what lucky charm Taylor Swift has when it comes to awards,(must be something in the country water). But yes,yet again, the country-pop singer managed to scoop herself a number of awards including the coveted "Artist of the Year" awards beating Macklemore & Lewis, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake. (And that was some tough competition). In her acceptance speech she mention how 2013 has been her year given that the number 13 is her lucky number. (And we have been answered).

2013 has not only been a "lucky" year for Taylor Swift for many other artistes including Justin Timberlake, rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, pop princess Rihanna and new kid on the block Ariana Grande.Justin Timberlake won favorite pop/rock male, favorite soul/R&B male artist a…

The strum: Tariro NeGitare

The guitar is the most beautiful instrument that suits any genre of music and can be played at any tempo.
In  Zimbabwe the sounds of the guitar are not unfamiliar with the success of one of our most prolific "strummers" and fathers in music,Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi.
And it seems everybody wants to play the guitar bringing in their own sound or taking a cue from the maestro himself. Amongst the younger breed of guitarists is Tariro Ruzvidzo a.k.a Tariro NeGitare. This lady is what we would like to call Zimbabwe's Tracy Chapman. With her sultry voice and upbeat afrosoul sound, who wouldn't want to listen to this lady.
She's causing waves on the live stages and on the airwaves.Travelling abroad and rubbing shoulders with music's legends, she is proof that girls do 'rock' although in this context, they strum.Eloquent, intelligent and with a pleasant aura,Tariro holds the qualities of a great artist as she also upholds a good standard of professionalism…

Christmas is that time of year where friends and family come together and celebrate the year, life and each other. It's a time where our hearts are more open and charitable as the spirit of giving surrounds us.A great time for most businesses with the commercial atmosphere that comes with it as consumers go on holidays, eat out and go on some crazy shopping sprees.

From one of the biggest churches in Zimbabwe,Celebration Ministries International brings to all of us the meaning of Christmas by bringing the theatrical production based in the nativity play called "Christmas Foretold".Inspired and written by Bonnie Deuschle, Christmas Foretold was designed to reveal this beloved story in a fresh and innovative way.

Pastor Bonnie Deuschle and the Celebration Choir sing traditional Christmas carols along with some of the famed songs from Celebration Church. After 10 years from the first ever production which debuted in 1992;Christmas Foretold-In Search Of A King was back on stage …

G Music: Star Power

Star PowerIt's quite a well known fact that receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is the most prestigious accolade that one could ever get in their entertainment career.(And then comes the Grammy or Oscar award)
Here at Groove Magazine we also have our own walk of fame, although we give it to the international artists who have influenced our own urban culture through their works. So on our walk of fame today we are rating one controversial rapper's 'star power'-meaning their ability to influence and have a long standing career.Having discussed about the "Parental Advisory" sign on most rap albums,it would seem that we are contradicting ourselves;but as we highlighted,it was just an analysis, please do bring forth your rap albums. Our star power rating goes to Marshall Bruce Mathers III also known as Eminem.
