Know Your Music: Berry Gordy

Happy Birthday Berry Gordy

Berry Gordy, Jr. was born November 28, 1929 and is an American record producer, and songwriter. He is best known as the founder of the Motown record label, as well as its many subsidiaries.
It was more than 50 years ago today that Berry Gordy borrowed $800 from some relatives and founded Tamla Records, a small Detroit label that would eventually lead to Motown Records.

Motown was the best investment in black music to ever to date. To honor the legend, we’re counting down 25 of Gordy's label's essential tracks. Without Berry Gordy's brainchild we wouldn't have had Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, amongst the many successful superstars, no old schools to sample and that is why for Gordy's birthday, we are all donning some afros, jerry curls, suave suits and dresses.

Rihanna Look Alike Makes Bank Off Endorsements

RiRi's Lookalike Is Making a Career Out of Her Resemblance

Many women dream of looking like their favourite celebrities, well for 22 year old Boston native, Andele Lara, she does not have to dream.

The Boston student that reportedly made upwards of $20,000 because she looks just like Rihanna. According to a Gawker report, Lara has been offered large amounts of money by clothing companies asking Lara to help them promote their product. The thing about it is, Lara isn’t even trying. More than likely, the reason she decided to start monetizing her natural “talent” is because all over picture comments, Instagrammers are going on and on about how she looks just like the beloved pop star.

She told the Daily Mail that she mistakenly ended up in the same nightclub as Rihanna's ex Chris Brown, and was mobbed as everyone thought she was the lady herself.

Eminem’s Shady XV Album

Stream: Eminem’s Shady XV Album

To celebrate that 15-year milestone for Shady Records, the Eminem-founded outfit dropped Shady XV this week. The album — which comes in addition to a 66-track mixtape, which dropped over the weekend — features 27 cuts of pure Shady madness.

The first 12 joints are brand new, with plenty of Em, a DJ Premier-produced Slaughterhouse track, some Yelawolf, and a new D12 song. There are a number of standouts, including the posse cut, “Detroit vs. Everybody,” and Marshall’s “Fine Line,” which serves as another in a long line of his tracks contemplating his own fame and how its impacted his life.

The second half of the project offers old favorites, like “In da Club,” “Purple Pills,” “Wanksta” and “Lose Yourself.”

The album is available now in stores and on iTunes.

UMOJI: Emotion through Symbols

Emotion through Symbols
In this globalized world where language is so often expressed in a manner that breaks barriers, what place does dialect hold with regards to the visual experience? Is there any consideration of the complexities that in its structural, elementary and principled auspices of time and space along with the visual experience has been evolving into a more lucid style of presentation from acronyms such as “o-o-m-f” to the coyly smiling swirling dollop of dung lead to a conclusion that language and image have been going in a direction which comes down to basic emotive expressions which summarize the inquisitive, evocative and the responsive with no more than one symbol?

The focus shifts to Africa with hieroglyphics from the age of antiquity; the Ge’ez and Tifinagh scripts and their ideographic representation and the Adinkra symbology exemplify  forms of writing and of course, images which present (or presented) a means of direct and indirect communication before …

Know Your Music: Divas

The Makings Of a Diva

There have been many female entertainers with super-sized fame, bank balance, talent and most, egos! We have often heard or used the term 'diva' and recently new-kid Ariana Grande was accused of acting like one at the MTV EMAs (not cool for your level honey). Since today one iconic diva turns a year older, Tina Turner if you didn't know; so we took it upon ourselves to musiducate readers on what determines a #diva, so for those who want to understand the terminology or are aspiring to be divas, here are points to the makings of a diva...
According to Beyonce a diva is a female version of a hustler, could be true but here are the dictionary definitions:
1. The main female singer in an opera company 2. A famous and successful woman who is very attractive and fashionable; especially : an attractive and successful female performer or celebrity 3. A diva is a female performer, usually an opera singer, who is extremely talented but very imperious a…
