Groove Awards: Class Of 2014

Class Of 2014 Urban Music

The year 2014 saw some considerable amount of fresh  talent that all showed signs of staking claims in the proverbial music league. From tracks that threatened your ability to resist the “repeat one” option, to multiple guest appearances, to full-fledged bodies of work that will likely win a Grammy, these artists’ first seasons in the game put dope stats on the board.

Whether you consider yourself a “Hot Nigga” or not doesn’t really matter at this point; Bobby Shmurda had the hottest song of the year. One song landed the rapper a major record deal and the Shmoney Dance was the most popular dance in 2014.

Tinashe

Tinashe is a breath of fresh air to the R&B scene. While her DJ Mustard-produced and Schoolboy Q-assisted “2 On” served as the soundtrack to turn ups everywhere all year, the singer also released a solid body of work with Aquarius.

Young Thug

Liking Young Thug is an involuntary reaction of sorts. You don’t necessarily intend to mimic hi…

Class Of 2014

Discovering an under-the-radar artist is one of Groove Magazine's mandates (and we push them until the fat lady sings). With a new breed of artists emerging from all over Zimbabwe, 2014 saw potential diversity in the musical genres in Zimbabwean urban music. Here are some of the home grown singer/rappers we believe have a future in music.

Shingi Mangoma

25 year old Show Time Records singer-songwriter Shingirayi Mangoma, has been singing since her high school years and started recording professionally in 2013. Her singles Run, Shattered Limits and Hokoyo have remarkably caused waves on Zimbabwean radio. Shingi's current single with Show Time producer Reverb7 "Handikusiiye" is on rotation on local radio stations and promises to be a hit in 2015.

Future Predictions: Shingi has an advantage of being a solid English and Shona songwriter which complements the urban, contemporary nuances with Afro-centric, cultural elements of her sound. She also has a good finan…

Most Interesting Beefs In 2014

People do acknowledge that there is nothing like strife that spices things up. Whether we admit it or not we all love a little drama between individuals or groups whether it's about trivial issues or some really deep stuff. So who was beefing in 2014 and who's side did you pick?

In no particular order we put our contenders and who we picked:

Nicki Minaj Vs Iggy Azalea

We picked: Nicki Minaj. Nicki is Queen and she slays the rap game!..."Thought you knew better!"
Azalea Banks Vs Iggy Azalea

We picked: Azalea Banks. Azalea has a point...a strong one!
Snoop Dogg Vs Iggy Azalea

We picked: Iggy Azalea...What Snoop did on Instagram was not cool at all! If Iggy wanted to retaliate...
Solange Vs Jay Z

We picked: Eish, can we have a re-run on that! The memes were hilarious though!
Mike Epps Vs Kevin Hart

We picked: Mike Epps...Kevin Hart is overrated!
Cassper Nyovest Vs AKA
We picked: Cassper Nyovest. Someone needed to ruffle AKA's ego and it happen…
